Isha Upanishad

ईशावास्योपनिषद्

The Isha Upanishad is one of the shortest of the principal Upanishads, forming the fortieth and final chapter of the Shukla Yajurveda. Its 18 mantras address the relationship between the individual, the world, and the supreme reality, opening with the declaration that the Lord pervades all that moves, and closing with a prayer to Agni for guidance along a good path. The text holds together renunciation and action, knowledge and good works, presenting both as necessary for the person seeking liberation.

ॐ ई॒शा वा॒स्य॑मि॒दँ सर्वं॒ यत्किं च॒ जग॑त्यां॒ जग॑त् । तेन॑ त्य॒क्तेन॑ भुञ्जीथा॒ मा गृ॑धः॒ कस्य॑ स्वि॒द्धन॑म् ॥ १ ॥

oṃ īśā vāsyam idaṃ sarvaṃ yat kiñca jagatyāṃ jagat | tena tyaktena bhuñjīthā mā gṛdhaḥ kasya svid dhanam || 1 ||

Simple English
Primary Translation

Everything that moves in this world belongs to the Lord. Give it all up to him, and then you may enjoy. Do not desire another person's wealth.

कु॒र्वन्ने॒वेह कर्मा॑णि जिजीवि॒षेच्छ॒तँ सामाः॑ । ए॒वं त्वयि॒ नान्यथे॒तो॑ऽस्ति॒ न कर्म॑ लिप्यते॒ नरे॑ ॥ २ ॥

kurvann eveha karmāṇi jijīviṣec chataṃ samāḥ | evaṃ tvayi nānyatheto 'sti na karma lipyate nare || 2 ||

Simple English
Primary Translation

Even if a man wishes to live for a hundred years doing his works, this is the way it must be for him — no other way exists. Done in this spirit, work does not stick to him.

अ॒सु॒र्या॒ नाम॑ ते लो॒का अ॒न्धेन॒ तम॒सावृ॑ताः । तास्ते प्रेत्या॒भिग॑च्छन्ति॒ ये के चा॑त्म॒हनो॒ जनाः॑ ॥ ३ ॥

asuryā nāma te lokā andhena tamasāvṛtāḥ | tāṃs te pretyābhigacchanti ye ke cātmahano janāḥ || 3 ||

Simple English
Primary Translation

There are worlds of the Asuras wrapped in blinding darkness. Those who have destroyed their true self go to those worlds after death.

अने॑ज॒देकं॒ मन॑सो॒ जवी॑यो॒ नैन॑द्दे॒वा आ॑प्नुव॒न्पूर्व॒मर्ष॑त् । तद्धाव॑तो॒ऽन्यानत्ये॑ति॒ तिष्ठ॒त्तस्मि॑न्न॒पो मा॑त॒रिश्वा॑ दधाति ॥ ४ ॥

anejad ekaṃ manaso javīyo nainad devā āpnuvan pūrvam arṣat | tad dhāvato 'nyān atyeti tiṣṭhat tasminn apo mātariśvā dadhāti || 4 ||

Simple English
Primary Translation

The Self never moves, yet it is swifter than thought. The senses cannot catch it — it was already there before them. Standing still, it outruns all who are running. Mātariśvan, the wind, sets everything in motion within it.

तदे॑जति॒ तन्नै॑जति॒ तद्दू॒रे तद्व॑न्ति॒के । तद॒न्तर॑स्य॒ सर्व॑स्य॒ तदु॒ सर्व॑स्यास्य बाह्य॒तः ॥ ५ ॥

tad ejati tan naijati tad dūre tad v antike | tad antar asya sarvasya tad u sarvasyāsya bāhyataḥ || 5 ||

Simple English
Primary Translation

It moves, and it does not move. It is far away, and it is near. It is inside everything, and it is also outside everything.

यस्तु सर्वा॑णि भू॒तान्या॒त्मन्ने॒वानु॒पश्य॑ति । स॒र्व॒भू॒तेषु॑ चा॒त्मानं॒ ततो॒ न वि जु॑गुप्सते ॥ ६ ॥

yas tu sarvāṇi bhūtāny ātmany evānupaśyati | sarvabhūteṣu cātmānaṃ tato na vijugupsate || 6 ||

Simple English
Primary Translation

Whoever sees all beings in the Self, and the Self in all beings, is never repelled by anything.

यस्मि॒न्त्सर्वा॑णि भू॒तान्या॒त्मैवाभू॑द्विजान॒तः । तत्र॒ को मोहः॒ कः शोक॑ एक॒त्वम॑नु॒पश्य॑तः ॥ ७ ॥

yasmin sarvāṇi bhūtāny ātmaivābhūd vijānataḥ | tatra ko mohaḥ kaḥ śoka ekatvam anupaśyataḥ || 7 ||

Primary Translation

For a person who truly understands and sees all things as one Self, what sorrow or confusion can remain?

स पर्य॑गाच्छु॒क्रम॑का॒यम॑व्र॒णम॑स्नावि॒रँ शु॒द्धमपा॑पविद्धम् । क॒विर्म॑नी॒षी प॑रि॒भूः स्व॑यं॒भूर्या॑थातथ्य॒तोऽर्था॑न् व्य॑दधाच्छाश्व॒तीभ्यः॒ समा॑भ्यः ॥ ८ ॥

sa paryagāc chukram akāyam avraṇam asnāviraṃ śuddham apāpaviddham | kavir manīṣī paribhūḥ svayambhūr yāthātathyato 'rthān vyadadhāc chāśvatībhyaḥ samābhyaḥ || 8 ||

Primary Translation

The Self pervades everything: radiant, bodiless, without wound or sinew, pure, untouched by sin. A seer, all-knowing, self-existent, it has rightly ordered all things across eternal time.

अ॒न्धं तमः॒ प्र वि॑शन्ति॒ येऽवि॑द्यामु॒पास॑ते । ततो॒ भूय॑ इव॒ ते तमो॒ य उ॑ वि॒द्याया॑ र॒ताः ॥ ९ ॥

andhaṃ tamaḥ praviśanti ye 'vidyām upāsate | tato bhūya iva te tamo ya u vidyāyāṃ ratāḥ || 9 ||

Simple English
Primary Translation

Those who follow only good works without knowledge enter into blind darkness. Those who delight only in knowledge, as if that alone were enough, enter into an even greater darkness.

अ॒न्यदे॒वाहुर्वि॒द्यया॒न्यदा॑हु॒रवि॑द्याया । इति॑ शुश्रुम॒ धीरा॑णां॒ ये न॒स्तद्वि॑चचक्षि॒रे ॥ १० ॥

anyad evāhur vidyayānyad āhur avidyayā | iti śuśruma dhīrāṇāṃ ye nas tad vicacakṣire || 10 ||

Simple English
Primary Translation

The wise say that knowledge and non-knowledge lead to different results. This is what we have been taught by those who explained it to us.

वि॒द्यां चावि॑द्यां च॒ यस्तद्वेदो॒भय॑ँ स॒ह । अवि॑द्यया मृ॒त्युं ती॒र्त्वा वि॒द्यया॒मृत॑मश्नुते ॥ ११ ॥

vidyāṃ cāvidyāṃ ca yas tad vedobhayaṃ saha | avidyayā mṛtyuṃ tīrtvā vidyayāmṛtam aśnute || 11 ||

Simple English
Primary Translation

Whoever knows both knowledge and non-knowledge together crosses over death by means of non-knowledge, and reaches immortality through knowledge.

अ॒न्धं तमः॒ प्र वि॑शन्ति॒ येऽसं॑भूतिमु॒पास॑ते । ततो॒ भूय॑ इव॒ ते तमो॒ य उ॒ संभू॑त्या र॒ताः ॥ १२ ॥

andhaṃ tamaḥ praviśanti ye 'sambhūtim upāsate | tato bhūya iva te tamo ya u sambhūtyāṃ ratāḥ || 12 ||

Simple English
Primary Translation

Those who worship what is not the true cause enter into blind darkness. Those who delight only in the true cause enter into an even greater darkness.

अ॒न्यदे॒वाहुः सं॑भ॒वाद॒न्यदा॑हु॒रसं॑भवात् । इति॑ शुश्रुम॒ धीरा॑णां॒ ये न॒स्तद्वि॑चचक्षि॒रे ॥ १३ ॥

anyad evāhuḥ saṃbhavād anyad āhur asaṃbhavāt | iti śuśruma dhīrāṇāṃ ye nas tad vicacakṣire || 13 ||

Simple English
Primary Translation

The wise say that knowing the true cause leads to one result, and knowing what is not the true cause leads to another. This is what our teachers taught us.

संभू॑तिं च विना॒शं च॒ यस्तद्वेदो॒भय॑ँ स॒ह । वि॒ना॒शेन॑ मृ॒त्युं ती॒र्त्वा संभू॑त्या॒मृत॑मश्नुते ॥ १४ ॥

saṃbhūtiṃ ca vināśaṃ ca yas tad vedobhayaṃ saha | vināśena mṛtyuṃ tīrtvā saṃbhūtyāmṛtam aśnute || 14 ||

Simple English
Primary Translation

Whoever knows both the true cause and what is perishable together crosses over death through the perishable, and reaches immortality through knowledge of the true cause.

हि॒र॒ण्मये॑न॒ पात्रे॑ण स॒त्यस्यापि॑हितं॒ मुख॑म् । तत्त्वं पू॑ष॒न्नपावृ॑णु स॒त्यध॑र्माय दृ॒ष्टये॑ ॥ १५ ॥

hiraṇmayena pātreṇa satyasyāpihitaṃ mukham | tat tvaṃ pūṣann apāvṛṇu satyadharmāya dṛṣṭaye || 15 ||

Simple English
Primary Translation

The face of Truth is hidden behind a golden cover. O Pushan, remove it, so that I who love Truth may see it.

पूषन्नेकर्षे यम सूर्य प्राजापत्य व्यूह रश्मीन्समूह । तेजो॒ यत्ते॑ रू॒पं कल्या॑णतमं॒ तत्ते॑ पश्यामि॒ योऽसावसौ पुरु॑षः॒ सो॒ऽहम॑स्मि ॥ १६ ॥

pūṣann ekarṣe yama sūrya prājāpatya vyūha raśmīn samūha tejaḥ | yat te rūpaṃ kalyāṇatamaṃ tat te paśyāmi yo 'sāv asau puruṣaḥ so 'ham asmi || 16 ||

Primary Translation

O Pushan, sole seer, Yama, Sun, child of Prajāpati — spread your rays and draw in your radiance. That most beautiful form of yours, I behold it. That person who is there in the sun — I am He.

वा॒युरनि॑लम॒मृत॒मथे॒दं भस्मा॑न्त॒ँ शरी॑रम् । ॐ क्रतो॒ स्मर॑ कृ॒तँ स्म॑र॒ क्रतो॒ स्मर॑ कृ॒तँ स्म॑र ॥ १७ ॥

vāyur anilam amṛtam athedaṃ bhasmāntaṃ śarīram | oṃ krato smara kṛtaṃ smara krato smara kṛtaṃ smara || 17 ||

Simple English
Primary Translation

May this breath return to the immortal air. May this body end in ashes. Om. O mind, remember. Remember what was done. Mind, remember. Remember what was done.

अग्ने॒ नय॑ सु॒पथा॑ रा॒ये अ॒स्मान्विश्वा॑नि देव व॒युना॑नि वि॒द्वान् । यु॒यो॒ध्य॒स्मज्जु॑हुरा॒णमेनो॒ भूयि॑ष्ठां ते॒ नम॑ उ॒क्तिं विधेम ॥ १८ ॥

agne naya supathā rāye asmān viśvāni deva vayunāni vidvān | yuyodhy asmaj juhurāṇam eno bhūyiṣṭhāṃ te nama uktiṃ vidhema || 18 ||

Primary Translation

O Agni, lead us along a good path to what is good, O God who knows all things. Remove crooked sin from us. We shall offer you the fullest worship.
