Hanuman Chalisa 43 Verses

Hanuman Chalisa

हनुमान चालीसा

The Hanuman Chalisa is a forty-verse devotional hymn composed by the poet-saint Tulsidas, probably in the 16th century CE, in the Avadhi dialect of Hindi. The word chalisa means forty, referring to the forty chaupai verses at its heart. The hymn opens with two doha couplets — the first an invocation to the guru, the second a prayer to Hanuman himself — and closes with a final doha asking Hanuman to dwell in the devotee's heart. The forty chaupais praise Hanuman's divine qualities and great deeds: his role as Rama's messenger, his crossing of the ocean, his burning of Lanka, his revival of Lakshman, and his power to protect devotees from all harm. The Hanuman Chalisa is among the most widely recited devotional texts in India.
